It is a handsome, insightful, and very interesting book. Importantly, she includes many examples of outstanding artwork that has been created by some of the world’s greatest illustrators, and short biographies of the artists.
Tatar also provides a good short biography of Hans Christian Andersen. These are presented with annotations that explain allusions, contextual detail, interesting biographical facts, unusual words, Danish customs, and other fascinating and important matters that would otherwise puzzle a reader, or leave the reader unaware of what Hans Christian Andersen really meant, or the times in which he was writing, or relevant events and attitudes in his life.
